Love to Read

Our children love books and love to read! Our reading curriculum is rich and varied and children experience a wide range of high quality texts both in English lessons and across the curriculum. To further enhance our offer, we invite authors into school to share their books, tell stories and talk about their experiences as an author. Children really enjoy these visits and are inspired and invigorated by them.

Our ‘core’ texts are central to our ‘Love to Read’ programme.  They are a collection of carefully chosen stories, which connect our curriculum with wonderful, engaging children’s literature, to inspire, extend understanding and develop a love of reading.

Children develop their understanding of ‘story’ whilst discussing their favourite books and recommending books to one another during our ‘Read a book from home’ sessions in Reception and Key Stage 1.

We take children to the local library to meet storytellers, attend story-telling sessions, further expand their experiences with books and explore reading opportunities within the community.

We also invite the book fair into school so children have the chance to browse and buy new books. We use World Book Day as an opportunity to think about our favourite characters and learn about new books from others.

Year 3 have taken part in the BBC Novels that shaped the world - ‘Adventures in Libraryland’ this was an exciting opportunity as only 3 schools and 3 libraries in Northumberland are taking part!

Jenny, from Haltwhistle library, came and visited us and shared some fantastic adventure novels. Jenny left us a magnificent bundle of books to look out, share and read to get lots of ideas for our puppets. We can’t wait to carry on reading them.
