Admissions

We are delighted that you are considering a place for your child at Haltwhistle Primary Academy.

Children typically join our school in nursery at age 3 or at the start of Reception (the academic year in which they turn 5), however children can join us at any age from 3-11 years.  We warmly welcome visits to our friendly school. These can be arranged by Mrs Shirley Phillips in our school office (01434 320467).

Admissions to Haltwhistle Academy from reception to year 6 are managed by Northumberland County Council. We manage our own nursery admissions within school.

The Northumberland County Council’s admissions policy applies, as do the arrangements for an appeal if needed.  You can apply for a place for your child to start with us prior to reception class or at any other time. A link to Northumberland County Council can be found below.

Our  school specific admissions policy and our nursery admissions form and policy can be found in the policies section of this website.

We hold our own register of families interested in joining our school.  By registering, you will receive our newsletters and be invited to our main school events.  To register your interest in joining Haltwhistle Academy, please complete the form by clicking on the button  below or speak to our office team, who will be pleased to help you.

Nursery - 30 hours funded and 15 hours funded provision

We offer the universal 15 hours funded places for children attending nursery in addition to 30 hours places for eligible 3 and 4 year olds.  These hours are flexible and can be used in our nursery or shared with another provider, such as Haltwhistle Little Star. Parents and carers of 3 and 4 year olds will need to meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for 30 hours funding.

They earn or expect to earn the equivalent to 16 hours at National Minimum or Living Wage over the coming three months.

  • This equates to £120 a week (or £6,000 a year) for each parent over 25 years old or £112.80 a week (or £5,800 a year) for each parent between 21 and 24 years old.
  • This applies whether you are in paid employment, self-employed or on zero hours contract.
  • The parent (and their partner where applicable) should be seeking the free childcare to enable them to work.
  • Where one or both parents are on maternity, paternity, shared parental or adoption leave, or if they are on statutory sick leave.
  • Where one parent meets the income criteria and the other is unable to work because they are disabled, have caring responsibilities or have been assessed as having limited capability to work.
  • Where a parent is in a ‘start-up period’ (example: they are newly self-employed) they do not need to demonstrate that they meet the income criteria for 12 months.
  • If a non-EEA national, the parent must have recourse to public funds.

Further information about accessing this funding can be found here on the Northumberland County Council website or by speaking to a member of our friendly office team in school.

Extra sessions in nursery

We offer our families the option to book extra sessions in nursery, where these are available.  Extra nursery sessions run from 8.45-11.45am or 12.15 to 3.15pm and cost £14 per session.  Contact the school office to book additional sessions.

School Uniform

A uniform list can be found here.  School jumpers, cardigans and bookbags can be ordered from our supplier, Emblematic.  We recommend that orders are placed early as demand is high over the summer holidays.

Our uniform website can be found at: https://emblematic.co.uk/schools/hwa/

We also have a ‘Uniform Recycling’ Swap Shop as an eco-friendly way of supporting our families with uniform expenses. Parents can leave clean, outgrown uniform in the drop box by the main entrance, this is sorted and redistributed to families as needed.  Families who would like to access this service can speak to any member of the staff team.
