A Message from our Headteacher
A very warm welcome to Haltwhistle First Academy. We are a friendly and vibrant 1 1/2 form entry first school academy in Haltwhistle, with 250 children aged between 3 and 9.
At Haltwhistle First Academy we create exceptional early education experiences for all our children. Our curriculum and our teaching approaches are designed to establish a love of learning, encourage creativity and develop young enquiring minds. We equip our children with the essential skills to become successful learners for life, and with this in mind, we take every opportunity to connect with our local community to make learning real, relevant and inspirational for our pupils.
We are proud of our culture of care, our sense of community, respect of and for others which is notable around school and which is often commented upon by our visitors. Our strong inclusive ethos, encourages every child to be confident, to overcome barriers and to achieve well. Our children are encouraged to value their individuality, celebrate and respect their differences and to work together as a community as they learn to become responsible citizens. We set high standards for ourselves, believing in the values of respect, hard work and achievement for all.
Education is a partnership between home and school and we place a great deal of emphasis on our partnership with parents. We believe that children learn best when home and school work together and we ask that parents support their child throughout their learning journey through our school.
Haltwhistle First Academy is a special place to learn and grow. If your child is joining us for the first time we welcome you and look forward to a happy and successful partnership with you over the coming years.
If you would like any more information about the academy, or to arrange a visit, please contact Mrs Shirley Phillips in our school office, 01434 320491.
We are a “Get Reading. Keep Reading. Change Everything.” school.
We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success in the KS1 tests.
Ruth Miskin Training recognise us for teaching the programme with fidelity and passion – we know what it takes to make reading and writing pleasurable and rewarding for our children.
This badge recognises that we:
- Raise standards in reading and writing for our children
- Are all expertly trained by Ruth Miskin Training – including our headteacher Mrs Susie Drake.
- Gain the latest programme updates through regular visits from our Ruth Miskin Consultant Trainer
- Support our most vulnerable readers with extra one-to-one teaching every day.

“I am completely taken aback by the standard and level of work in my son’s books. He is clearly fully engaged and interested in his work, his Maths has really come on too. I just want you to know that I think this school is amazing and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone”
